"ARTSEEN 11" Annual Showcase of New and Experimental Art

"Artseen" is Artcite's annual, unjuried off-site exhibition of new and experimental art for Windsor/ Detroit area artists. Since its inception, "Artseen" has provided a variety of different sites to artists who are interested in installing their work in non-traditional settings. Past "Artseen" locations have included a disused warehouse and box factory; a vacant post office and government building; a 1930s-era office building, a former turn-of-the century dairy, and the former Windsor police headquarters. Many of the works in "Artseen" are site-specific, process works and develop over the duration of the shows. "Artseen" is open to the public for extended hours throughout the exhibition run.

"Artseen's" 11th edition was staged at Windsor's new Canada South Science City, a renovated elementary school in downtown Windsor with interactive science exhibits, workshops and tours for children. The combination of finished spaces-including Science City displays, and unchanged hallways, classrooms and cubbyholes-lent itself well to the diversity of site-specific installation works featured in this show and provided many artists with the inspiration to create projects based on the interaction of the arts and sciences.

Over 50 Windsor/Detroit area artists participated in "Artseen 11": Jason Amlin, Andrew Awad, Sohail Azad, Alana Bartol, Leesa Bringas, Christine Burchnall, Michael Califano, Teena Campbell, Dean Carson, Carl Clark, Rebecca Curran, John Deck, Jonathan Dy, the E.I.E.I.O. i) "RECYCLED CINEMA, THE SATAN McNUGGIT VIDEO ROAD SHOW"
"Recycled Cinema" is a two-hour touring program of Canadian independent film and video, featuring "subversive animations, crafty lo-fi shorts, and culture jamming collages". The program toured to more than forty venues from Dawson City to St. John's during AugustNovember 2003. "Recycled Cinema" was presented by Artcite and House of Toast in Windsor as part of the opening festivities at "Artseen 11". Program organizer/ curator Jonathan Culp visited as a guest of Artcite to attend the event and introduce the screening.

ii) "CRUSTACEANS AND COMMUNISTS" live film and music performance by "Big Chocolate Flavour" aka Johnny Deck (Windsor)

Local filmmaker/one-man band/fez-wearing mad scientist Johnny Deck entertained visitors to the opening of "Artseen 11" with an evening-long performance on various musical instruments, accompanied by projections of found educational films featuring lobsters, Mao and other red things.

iii) "COMIC JAM" organized by Kristen Gallarneaux (Windsor)
Beginning at the opening of "Artseen 11" and continuing for the duration of the show, local artist Kristen Gallarneaux assembled a workshop area and raw materials for the creation of an ongoing, "exquisite corpse" style comic book/ graphic novel.. Many artists and visitors to Artseen contributed to the project which is now being compiled by Gallarneaux into chapbook/ 'zine form.

Many thanks to Linda Balga and the folks at Canada South Science City for their generous assistance in the presentation of "Artseen 11".
