(Nov.14 - Nov.29) "ARTSEEN 5: OFF-SITE ARTCITE'S ANNUAL SHOWCASE OF NEW & EXPERIMENTAL ART" (Windsor/Detroit area) (Open; unjuried off-site exhibition. Mixed media site installation, interventions and performance)

Location: The Old Walkerville Post Office

This year, "Artseen" was held in a disused, turn-of-the Century post office in the Walkerville district of Windsor. In past years, "Artseen" has provided a variety of different settings to artists who are interested in installing their work in non-traditional settings. Many of the works are site-specific and develop over the duration of the show. "Artseen 5" carries on with this by offering over 10,000 square feet of former office space to artists from the Windsor/Detroit and London area. In addition to the exhibitions, an opening night performance featured City Wide Vacuum, an electronic musical duo, and Alan Bukoff with his Fluxus Midwest "domestic products demonstrations". We also presented a special performance by British culture jammer Scanner (aka Robin Rimbaud) on the closing night of "Artseen". Some of the exhibiting artists include: Mike Ambedian, Celio Barreto, Christine Burchnall, Susan Gold, Kevin Kilpatrick, Mark Laliberte, Chris Mangin, Melissa Mazar, Veronica Meloche, Natalie Olanick, Marko Stipanicic, Rod Strickland, Joe Wokolski, the E.I.E.I.O. Institute (Robert Andersen, Detroit; Christine Burchnall and Christopher McNamara, Windsor) and the "Common Sense Store", organized by Michael Czupryna, featuring items by Ontario artists Sarah Hartland-Rowe, Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge, Janet Morton, Judith Purdy and Nicole Waddick.

A group show in a massive, three-story abandoned space! Full of installations, performances and new works... also featuring an opening-night performance by City-Wide Vacuum (Windsor) and Britain's techno-pirate SCANNER (Robin Rimbaud) w/special guests Disseminator Audio (Windsor) on the closing night!

As special presentation as part of the "Artseen 5" events: November 27 & 29, 1997 with Scanner

Robin Rimbaud (aka Scanner), is a multi-media artist from London, England. Best known for his audio-surveillance infused ambient music works, Rimbaud has been referred to as a "techno-pirate" and "flaneur electronique". Rimbaud appeared as part of the 199798 "Visitors in the Arts" Lecture series, presented the audience with a demonstration of his process, conducted studio visits with local installation artists and musicians and presented an evening performance to close-out "ARTSEEN V". Rimbaud's appearance was of particular interest to the large community of electronic music composers who live and work in the Windsor and Detroit area.
